London Marathon uses edible water sachets to reduce plastic waste

With over 40,000 participants, organizers of the 2019 London Marathon held on Sunday, April 28 turned to ingenious solutions to reduce plastic waste. The annual event raises money for important causes but has been criticized for the plastic bottles left on the 42-kilometer route by runners and food packaging from spectators. This year, the London Marathon took multiple measures to minimize the use of plastic, as per a statement in early April. One stand-out solution was a station which offered edible seaweed sachets at Mile 23. Sports drinks company Lucozade Sport provided capsules called Oohos which biodegrade in four to six weeks. Oohos were created with start-up Skippi...

PH scores another ratings upgrade from S&P

MANILA, Philippines --- The Philippines earned an upgrade to 'BBB+' --- its highest credit rating in history --- from global debt watcher Standard & Poor's (S&P), which cited the country's strong growth trajectory, healthy external position, and sustainable public finances.   Now standing two notches above the coveted investment grade rating, this development will likely translate to lower borrowing costs from the international market for both the government and private corporations. This, in turn, translates to cheaper financing options for the domestic market that could help boost the economy further.   "We raised the rating to reflect the Philippines'...

Impeach or investigate? Democrats see no reason to choose

WASHINGTON --- Whatever happens next, don't call it impeachment. House Democrats have been careful not to rush to impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump in the aftermath of Robert Mueller's report, despite calls to do so by high-profile lawmakers and 2020 presidential contenders. But as Congress resumes Monday, the Democratic oversight and investigations agenda is starting to look a lot like the groundwork that would be needed to launch an impeachment inquiry. At some point, it's a political difference rather than a practical one. "I don't think there's a magical moment at which proceedings become 'really' impeachment proceedings," said Cornell Law School pro...

Asian markets mixed but tech firms sink

HONG KONG -- Technology firms took a hit in Asia on Tuesday as two of the biggest names in the sector posted disappointing earnings, dampening sentiment on markets in the region. A below-forecast reading on Chinese factory activity added to the downbeat mood, though a weak US inflation print reinforced expectations the Federal Reserve will keep well away from lifting interest rates any time soon. While corporate results have broadly beaten expectations so far, nagging concerns about the outlook for the global economy are keeping investors on edge, preventing them from extending what has been a stellar start to the year for equities. But his desire to score was far more evident in the first half against Inter Milan when he fired over the bar and showed anguish and frustration. That appeared to spur Ronaldo to the equalizer after the break as Juventus came back to draw with bitter rival Inter 1-1 in Serie A. "Ronaldo is lethal, I have him, and I'm happy," Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said. "It's important to have a player like him. PBS film ‘KOREA’ eyes social, political tolls of Korean War

To escape the poverty of South Texas migrant camps, Homer Garza joined the U.S. Army. Months later he and his company found themselves surrounded in South Korea by an invading North Korean force. Garza's story is one of many shared in the PBS documentary "KOREA: The Never-Ending War". The film, a production of WETA Washington, is scheduled to air on most PBS stations Monday and examines the lasting social and political costs of the Korean War --- a conflict largely forgotten in the U.S. It also tells the story of a war that redefined the region from the perspective of families, U.S. veterans and journalists. Chicago mayor brokers deal to end lengthy Symphony strike

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra will likely end its seven-week strike after the city's mayor Rahm Emanuel intervened to broker an agreement, his office said Friday, without detailing the terms. The musicians' association said it would vote to ratify the deal last Saturday, noting that it had yet to be briefed on the contents. The high-profile walkout over salary and the future of the players' pensions triggered the standoff in early March. "I am pleased to announce that, after convening both parties at City Hall for a successful negotiating session, the management and the musicians have reached an agreement in principle to bring the music back to Symphony Center," Emanuel sai...

Ahead of ‘The Irishman’, Scorsese and De Niro look back

Ahead of their much-anticipated and most recent collaboration, "The Irishman", Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro convened at the Tribeca Film Festival to look back on their long partnership together. The talk, staged Sunday at New York's Beacon Theatre, gave De Niro, co-founder of the festival, one of his most unlikely roles to date: interviewer. With interstitial clips chosen by Scorsese from the director's filmography, the famously terse actor didn't so much pepper or prod the filmmaker as occasionally announce it was time to discuss "the next one." But if the conversation relied largely on Scorsese, it still offered a window into their long-running collaboration. Begun with...
