MANILA, Philippines - The country's chief economist is backing moves to further jack up "sin" taxes slapped on cigarettes and alcoholic drinks to fund the universal health care program. "Yes, Neda is supportive," Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto M. Pernia, who heads the state planning agency National Economic and Development Authority, told reporters Wednesday when asked if he was supportive of the pending proposal of the Department of Finance (DOF) and Department of Health (DOH) to increase the excise taxes on sin products anew.
