Hypertension represents a major burden in Asia and in many parts of the world. This disease comes with a high prevalence rate and, unfortunately, poor levels of awareness and control in many countries. Hypertension is also the leading preventable cause of premature deaths worldwide, afflicting an estimated 1.4 billion people in 2010, and contributing to 10.5 million deaths each year. By 2030, it is estimated that almost 23.6 million will die from cardiovascular diseases. In the Philippines, a 2013 study shows that while 75% of patients receiving treatment for hypertension, only 27% of those achieve adequate BP control.
