TOKYO -- In Japan, the average age of taxi drivers was 59.9 years old in 2018, the highest among a survey of 129 types of occupation, while the average age of male taxi drivers topped 60 for the first time. These figures are partly due to a lack of young people who want to become taxi drivers, as a result of the low wages involved. According to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry's Basic Survey on Wage Structure, the average age of male taxi drivers was 60.1 in 2018, greatly surpassing the average age of all occupation types at 43.6.
