In March 2019, 28-year-old Jel Calooy was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the most common type of acute leukemia in adults. It is a rapidly-developing condition that can cause significant physical and emotional disability. Calooy's doctor, hematologist Dr. Alma Calavera, recommended bone marrow transplant for its high rate of cure for patients with AML. The medical procedure replaces the unhealthy blood-forming cells (stem cells) with healthy ones.
